High School Senior: Class of 2022

Reflecting on and Creating "I am" and "I want to become" Statements

I am:

I am a curious, motivated, and adaptable person and am passionate about helping others and doing meaningful work. I am currently involved in the TEDx IUPUI planning team and involved in Christian Student Fellowship. It brings me joy to understand and build connections with others while pursuing my own aspirations and passions.

Reflection:

In creating my "I am" statement I had to condense my goals into a few short sentences. Writing a short amount forced me to determine which values are most important. I also had to look within myself to see what qualities others might see in me evident in what I am involved in and my future aspirations.

I hope to become someone who looks for opportunities to change the world around them.

I see my life as an opportunity. An opportunity to do meaningful work both in my own life and in the lives of others. I am curious and love to learn about others and the world around me. Learning can be intimidating and overwhelming for me because of the vast amount of knowledge that is available. Nonetheless, I try to be as present in the moment as I am in looking ahead and behind to learn about the world around me.

As a hardworking student, I plan to pursue a successful academic career. Having goals that are far away like applying to medical school or doing well on the MCAT can be overwhelming to focus on. I try to focus on many manageable goals that will encourage, and not deter, me from having the motivation and enthusiasm to continue.

Although it is tempting to drown myself in schoolwork and my classes I also want to pursue bettering myself and the community. In that, I hope to get more involved in the community as far as working at a job and volunteering at an organization I am passionate about. I hope to be someone who catalyzes good ideas and is easy to work with. Part of that is getting involved on campus as well. I hope to put into school as much as I can get out of it. In my organizations, this can look like becoming a student leader or in chemistry becoming a recitation leader. This way I can help others who may struggle with similar things.

I hope to become the best version of myself always focusing on my future and present goals. Trying new things and not being afraid of a challenge so that I never miss the next big opportunity is important to pursuing my definition of success. In pursuing my goals I hope to make a difference in the world and the lives of others around me.

Reflection of "I want to become":

Writing an "I want to become" statement was difficult at first. As a college student, I constantly feel pressured to decide whom I am becoming and how I will get there. My statement includes why I want to impact those around me and how I plan to tackle challenges as they come. I also talk about how, although difficult, I want to become someone well-rounded and proficient in all areas of life in order to better myself and those I impact. It was a good experience to write this out because it gave me some clarity in what I want my future to look like. I also had to find a way to put what was going on in my head into a short summary that others who read this would understand.

Reflection of the honors class:

The Honors -H200 class is designed to teach honors students how to succeed in the honors program and also in life after college. I learned about how to turn any class into an honors credit with an honors contract and how to manage my stress in a healthy way. One of the most valuable parts of this experience was being in the class with an invaluable professor and collaborating with fellow honors students.

This project, although done for the cognitive bias assignment in my honors class, has very helpful and applicable information. Parkinson's law is about how work expands to fill whatever time is allotted to it. When we believe a project will take a certain amount of time it can lead to and taking longer to finish it. Ways to overcome this bias are detailed in the resources and infographic portions of this presentation. Organizing your time and having efficient work times can help with this bias.

This journey map shows a brief summary of how my life has gone and how I want it to go in the future. The major milestones I highlight are important to me and I feel helped shape who I am. The highlights are also things that have caused me the most stress or things I put a lot of work or thought into. Looking into the future, I put down a lot of things that I value in my future self.
