Presenting Research at the AACR

Working at a pathology lab for all 4 years of college, I have had the opportunity to conduct and present research that is meaningful to the scientific community and to my development as an undergraduate student. Most semesters, I have enrolled in independent study research credits for Honors. These credits showcase my passion for research and dedication to pursuing many forms of honors experiences. From creating an online database of pathological images to imaging and analyzing countless slides, I have gained experience, knowledge, and excellent collaboration skills. One of the highlights of working in my lab has been presenting posters inspired by my research and presenting them at various universities and conferences. In 2025, I submitted an abstract with my coauthor, Kayli Nguyen, for a poster session at the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) judged by leading medical professionals in cancer research.

Presenting a research poster at the AACR conference was a pivotal experience for me as I go into the field of medicine. This opportunity not only enhanced critical communication skills but also fostered confidence in articulating complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences. Engaging with peers and professionals encouraged networking, which is essential for future collaborations and career opportunities. Furthermore, navigating the research process cultivated problem-solving abilities and a deeper understanding of scientific inquiry, both of which are invaluable as I transition into my medical career.

Reflection

Reflecting on where I started at the beginning of working at my lab, to now, I have gained connections in the fields of medicine and pathology, knowledge of the classification of tissue grossly and microscopically, and communication skills through collaboration and presentations. My poster presentation at the AACR represents how my knowledge of cancer treatment and ability to communicate came together. Although I have been paid for this position, I feel that I could have paid for the education that I have received and skills I have learned.
